This article will guide you in replacing your 93-97 Camaro sealed headlights to a brighter, whiter silverstar bulb.
The stock headlights are a sealed beam. This means that there is no replacement bulb capsule and the whole assembly lamp needs to be replaced when a bulb burns out. It also means that there are no direct replacements of brighter bulbs unless you spend a few hundred dollars. To get past this you can convert your sealed beam to a Silver star replacement capsule.
Tools you will need:
T-15 Torx driver
Pliers
Flat blade screw driver
Parts and supplies you will need:
(2) 9006 Silverstar capsules for low beam
(2) 9005 Silverstar capsules for high beam
Tube of black RTV silicone
Electrical tape
**WARNING** Do not touch the bulb with your fingers. You will transfer body oils to the bulb and when heated by the lamp will explode and destroy the bulb.
Removal of stock lamps.
Remove the 2 Torx screws holding the lamp bezal in place.
Once removed the bezal will rotate allowing you to pull the lamp out.
Unplug the lamp and move to a working surface.
Removal of the bulb.
The bulb is basically glued in. Some say to use a torch to heat the glue, however I feel that the direct flame contact tends to cloud the lense and make for a dull light.
Instead, use indirect heat like a heat gun, heater, ect to heat the glue up.
Once heated slightly carefully start to pry the retaining ring with the screw driver or work it back and forth with the pliers.
Once the ring is out, continue working on the bulb itself until it's clear.
Installing the new bulb.
Once you have the old bulb out, clean the mounting point well.
Put a small amount of RTV on the under side of the bulb, around the O ring.
Carefully insert the bulb into the housing.
Use generous amounts of RTV to totally surrounds the bulb so that it's sealed and secured to the assembly.
Press the bulb into the housing as far as it will go.
Wrap electrical tape around the bulb and lense to hold it in place while the RTV dries.
Installing the new assembly.
Simply plug the new assembly into the connector.
Place the assembly into the bezel.
fold the bezel back over the lense.
Being careful not to drop the screws, replace the bezel screws.
That's all there is to it. All you have to do is repeat this system 3 more times. Make sure to use the correct high and low beam bulbs in the correct lense and location. If the housing you removed looks dull and clouded, you will need to replace the housing, and install the silverstar bulb into it to get the full effect.
Pictures to come soon.
